Why Cornwall for Your Holiday Let

If you are looking for a property to invest in as a holiday let you will want to give yourself the best possible chance of it being a profitable enterprise by choosing your location wisely. Location can make all the difference when it comes to occupancy levels and so you need to find an area which is in high demand by a range of tourists.

We’ll admit that we may be slightly biased, but we think that Cornwall ticks all the boxes for a profitable holiday let and gives you an excellent chance of making a success of your investment.

Attractive to All

Cornwall has wide ranging appeal and so attracts holiday rentals from lots of different types of customers. The traditional seaside pursuits of rock pooling and building sandcastles, teamed with a whole range of family-based attractions means that our visitor numbers in the high season are second to none. The surf culture and growing live music scene fuelled by festivals such as Boardmasters or big-name concerts at the Eden Project attract younger holiday seekers and the older couples’ market is easily catered for with foodie destinations, unrivalled walks and a rich heritage and culture to keep all entertained.

Let the Numbers do the Talking

Cornwall continuously appears within the top three UK holiday regions in the British Travel Awards, taking the top spot for a number of years running, which is testament to its popularity within the UK market. Whilst we are still awaiting the official figures for the 2017/18 season the results from the 2016/17 season speak for themselves:

• 2016/17 saw the largest growth in the youngest and oldest age groups visiting the county compared with the previous year.
• At 27%, 2016/17 saw the highest proportion of adults visiting the county with children, since 2012/13
• 2016/17 saw a year on year increase in secondary/additional holiday taking
• 84% of visitors said they are likely to visit Cornwall again.

Following a strong 2018 season the bookings for Cornwall businesses continue to look good with Peter Bull Resorts enjoying 44% increase in bookings to date, year on year.

Increased Transport Links

Cornwall’s beauty and attractiveness as a destination has never really been in question but one barrier that we historically faced was the ease of reaching the County.  We are now happy to report that it is easier than ever to get to Cornwall with the A30 having been turned into a dual carriageway, helping drivers avoid delays during busy times.  Newquay airport has also helped to make Cornwall more accessible with four daily flights to Heathrow London starting in March 2019 but also direct routes to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Newcastle and Ireland.

The airport is bringing people to the South West year-round with passenger numbers in November 2018 being up by 20% on the previous year and by 7% in December.  The airport also offers some direct international routes, so European travellers can take advantage of the favourable exchange rate.  The flights from Germany are particularly important for Cornwall as this has been one of our biggest growth markets for holidays.

Cornwall’s proximity to Plymouth and the cross-channel ferry is another great source of overseas visitors and our rail link to London, with an average 36 trains travelling from the capital daily, adds to our easy accessibility.

Not Just for Summer

Like many seaside destinations Cornwall used to open from Easter to September before the tumble weeds set in for the winter months! However, Cornwall has been successful in extending its holiday season by widening its appeal and is now open for business all year round.

The presence of so many well-known, celebrity chefs settling in the area has played a big part in the extension of the season and the quieter months are often more appealing as it is easier to get tables at these sought-after restaurants; and to enjoy special menu prices. Around this foodie culture large events have sprung up which are now a regular fixture on many visitors’ calendars including the Padstow Christmas Festival, Ice Skating at the Eden Project, Fish Festivals and music festivals too.

The result has been that Cornwall now holds year-round appeal for our visitors and although it is quieter outside of the school holidays, there are still plenty of bookings to be had for your holiday let.

Great for You Too!

If you are spending out on a holiday home, you may want to use the holiday let yourself from time to time or let family and friends take advantage of your purchase. It is therefore important to make sure that the location is attractive and convenient for you too. Again, we may have a little bias but we think that you can’t really go wrong with a holiday home in Cornwall.
